March Weaving Projects

WEAVING TEMPLATES

Here are images of the final weavings of the templates.

The white paper strips were included for the black template.

The colored paper strips were included for the the colored template. You can decide what colors to use where! The below is only an example that I made. There are 4 strips per color for you to play around with. Try putting the same color beside each other, looking at the patterns you want to highlight, etc.

Once you're done, it's also up to you how you want to trim the edges or if you want to cut the piece down to a different size.

MY WEAVING EXPLORATIONS

My intention for the weaving templates is to help you get started and get familiar so that you can then explore this technique on your own with more freedom in the pattern and paper choice!

As I was writing this month’s letter, it made me think of how weaving is a great representation of two different things co existing. It immediately reminded me of two opposite feelings existing at the same time--grief and joy, love and loss, etc. It made me think of living through a time where we see so much destruction, despair, and loss all around us yet have to continue living life as per usual--navigating and weaving through both the best that we can.

This became my inspiration during my own weaving exploration (I do these projects alongside you!) and I was drawn to the idea of collective feminine rage and whimsy--two things co-existing within many of us that I wanted to interpret and combine into one piece.

Below is a bit more about my process and photos at different stages.

I started off with 2 pieces of 5x7 paper, one to represent rage and the other whimsy. I printed quotes onto both sheets then added markings, doodles, and some confetti.

The whimsy sheet was cut into 3/8" strips and rage into 3/4". They were woven together based on what I wanted to show through.

The final thing I wanted to add was splatters of paint in gold, light blue, and yellow (leaning into the whimsy color palette!)

Lastly, I decided to trim the edges: top scalloped, bottom angular, and the sides fringe. And here's my final rage and whimsy weaving:
