FEBRUARY PROMPT CARD

ENVISION & EXPRESS
Here are some ideas and inspiration to help you get started! If you're having some decision fatigue, the number in the spark symbol on the prompt card can help: use the text prompt that coordinates with that number which would be imprint.
Going forward I'll also be creating a mood board for each prompt card! Click here or on the image below to see the entire board.
PERSPECTIVE
-
- Create a viewfinder. Learn how to make and use them here. I also like using this to focus on a smaller section of a project.
-
Change your perspective by...
- Turning your page upside down or sideways half way through your process. Leave it, turn it back to how it was, or keep turning it at different intervals.
- Split your page into 4 sections and create the same scene from 4 different perspectives such as from the viewpoint of a bird, a mouse, a giraffe, and a fish (tying in the prompt "wild" here :)
- Try a perspective drawing. Here is a tutorial for beginners that is part of a playlist with many more tutorials to pick from and try!
IMPRINT
-
- Put some ink or paint on these items and press them down on your paper or smush them into a smear of thick paint: stamps carved from potatoes or linoleum, random objects with interesting textures, things found in nature (leaves, flowers, etc.) or in your kitchen (fruits, veggies, etc.), anything else you think might be interesting!
- Start off by squeezing dots of paint on your paper/canvas, put a piece of paper or acrylic over it, then press down and peel off. Repeat the process, leave it as is, or keep on adding to it with other mediums and techniques.
- Incorporate pressed flowers or leaves into your work.
- Try this clay imprinting idea. I actually love following tutorials for kids and trying to put my own spin on it!
ARTIST
-
-
Pick one of your favorite artists. Create a portrait of them using characteristics from their style of art. (The artist doesn't have to be a visual artist! For example go with a musical artist and incorporate their lyrics in the portrait or use colors that match the vibe of their songs.)
- Reflect on your own artistic and creative journey. Think about all the different materials you have tried or spent a lot of time using. Then add a little bit of each--it can be the material / medium itself, a photo of a piece you created, etc.-- onto your page to create an abstract timeline / mash up of the mediums you have used throughout your life.

SOFT
- Alice Pasquini's softhearted murals paint stories over city scars
- Fabric. Incorporate scraps of fabric, ribbon, thread or other soft materials into your piece, try embroidery, or take elements from quilting such as the unique geometric patterns. Here is some inspiration via Bisa Butler's vibrant and beautiful textile art portraits! (Be sure to click on the pieces and zoom in to really see and appreciate the colors, patterns, and construction!)
WILD
- Kingdom Find inspiration from the colors, textures, patterns, and characteristics of creatures we share this planet with! Look to the forests, jungles, deserts. Try a literal interpretation such as a realistic sketch or painting or go with something more abstract where you're using elements that convey the idea or feel of a certain animal.
- Watch The Lion King Musical trailer and here's the performance of The Circle of Life
SYMBOLISM
- Learn more about this art movement and see if there is a belief, technique, or artist you connect with.
- Timo Fahler's Stained Glass Sculptures Question Symbols and Curtailed Freedoms
COLORS ON THE PROMPT CARD:
- Neon Yellow
- Try pairing it with: navy blue, light pink, eggplant purple, sage green, dark red, black, teal, hot pink
- Blue Green
- Try pairing it with: grey, beige, orange, mustard, brown, lavender, silver
PATTERN ON THE PROMPT CARD
- Finish the pattern. Copy the pattern as shown on the prompt card then add to it until you fill up your page and complete it.
- Use the pattern as is. Draw the pattern on a separate piece of paper and cut it out to create a piece you can glue to your page. (Try using colored paper or markers / different colored pens.) You can enlarge the pattern or make it tiny.
And don't forget to consider the opposites of all the prompts above and see where that takes you!
