NOVEMBER PROMPT CARD

ENVISION & EXPRESS
Here are some ideas and inspiration to help you get started! If you're having some decision fatigue, the number in the spark symbol on the prompt card can help: use the text prompt that coordinates with that number which would be 3. inside.
All of the below is open to your interpretation! Feel free to adapt, change, combine a few, and adjust as needed based on how you feel and what you feel inspired to do.

SOUNDS
-
- Visually recreate sound. Find inspiration from artist Wassily Kandinsky who painted what he heard. Sarah Kraning also has synesthesia and creates paintings of what songs look like. While we may not have synesthesia, we can still visually interpret sound: what colors does it look like? Is it a thick line or thin wavy line? Is it consistent or breaks off into smaller pieces or bursts? Is it bright and colorful, dark and moody?
- Use a song as your theme. Consider the feelings it stirs up, the lyrics, the feel. What scene would match the song you picked? What type of materials? What kind of style? Feel free to add some text into your piece.
- Pick 4 different sounds or genres of music. Split your page into 4 sections. Fill each one in while listening to that sound and see what comes up. Try: laughter, talking, birds chirping, sounds from cooking. Pick 4 genres such as classical/instrumental, pop, rock, and country.
- Recreate musical instruments. Pick one to fill your page or 3 or 4 and make them smaller to fit. Try using paper to recreate them, loose watercolor with pen outlines, or use acrylic paint and make thick brush strokes and layers.
WISPY
-
-
Wispy definition: a small handful, thin strip or fragment, fine, feathery. Here are a few synonyms: gauzy, dainty, airy, gossamer, diaphanous (very thin and easy to see through).
- Cirrus clouds are known for looking like wisps of hair. Look for a reference photo to paint. Here are a few photos and facts to you get started. Other wispy subjects to paint: smoke from a match/candle/chimney, tree branches, wheat blowing in the wind.
- Use a tool that is wispy such as a brush (try making one using natural materials) or thread.

PIECE
-
- Create a collage Tear paper into small pieces (use magazine and catalog pages, colored paper, scraps from other projects) to create something new. Use your imagination or find a reference photo to follow. Here's an example of something I made with pieces of junk mail.
- Various collections organized in shocking abundance.
- Make a mosaic I wanted to share this version because it's made from a paper item and helps us adapt this into something for our sketchbooks.
INSIDE
-
- Create a cozy scene inside. What room would you be in? What would you be surrounded by? What's the color palette like? How's the decor and furniture like? Who is in the scene with you?
- Inside / Outside. Experiment with this idea whether it's mixing outside elements with indoor elements, or the concept of coloring inside the lines / thinking outside the box, or a reflection of your inner and outer self.
- Megan Aline's Wooded Landscapes Nestled Inside Silhouettes
BURST
-
- Play with splatters and bursts of paint! Get messy and create splatters and other types of bursts of paint. (One of my favorites is putting paint on a balloon then popping it :))
- Use bursts of color in your piece. Try using unexpected colors in unexpected places.
- Unexpected paper quilled flowers burst with color and character
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN ART
- Learn more about this art movement.
- This post explores Egyptian textiles in present time.

PATTERN ON THE PROMPT CARD:
-
- Explore the use of diagonal lines Refer to mood board for ideas.
- Create a pattern using lines extending from different directions.
- Play with spacing between lines from very narrow to large and wide.
And don't forget to consider the opposites of all the prompts above as well as synonyms and see where that takes you!
VIRTUAL WORKSHOP

Inspired by the prompts "inside" (representing our feelings) and "burst" (for bursts of joy), this month's workshop will combine faux lettering and doodling to create a piece that incorporates the phrase "Joy Is An Act Of Resistance" and the different things that bring us joy. Below are a few examples of similar pieces to give you an idea of how it looks with more text and less doodles.
It'll be happening on Saturday, November 15th, from 11AM to Noon PST. If you'd like to join please RSVP below! (If you can't make it, you will receive the workshop recording.)
RSVP FOR THE WORKSHOP!

THIS MONTH'S EXTRA:
Joy Is An Act Of Resistance PDF
Print out this PDF and use it as a guide / template for lettering this phrase. The text is thin and in light grey so that it will not show up on your final piece. Bring it to the virtual workshop or create a piece on your own. Feel free to turn the lettering into faux calligraphy, make the lines thicker, add color--whatever comes to mind!
