IMPORTANT NOTE FOR JULY:
This month's prompts will be on the shorter side because starting July 13th I'll be hosting a Social Media Summer Break! It's a 3 week break from apps and techs--you set the parameters and I provide ideas and inspiration. As part of the SMSB, I am also hosting a 21 Every Days Art Project--it's based on my 100 Day Project and we'll be filling in one section a day throughout the break. If you'd like to learn more, you can sign up here and read the prep emails that have been sent so far:

If you are interested in doing the art project and NOT the break, you can sign up for just the art portion here:

JULY PROMPT CARD

ENVISION & EXPRESS
Here are some ideas and inspiration to help you get started! If you're having some decision fatigue, the number in the spark symbol on the prompt card can help: use the text prompt that coordinates with that number which would be 2. masculine.
All of the below is open to your interpretation! Feel free to adapt, change, and adjust as needed based on how you feel and what you feel inspired to do.

RIGHT
-
-
Focus on the right side of your paper. Consider...
- Having the bulk of your art in the right side, making it heavier and leaving the left side with more negative space
- Start at the top or bottom right hand corner and move your way across the page.
- Create on the right half of your page. Then mirror what you created on the left side using different colors.
-
Focus on the right side of your paper. Consider...
MASCULINE
-
- What does masculine mean to you? Translate that into visuals for your piece this month. Consider colors, the width and opacity of brush strokes, patterns, words, the feeling / energy / vibe you want to capture. You can also bring in what feminine energy looks like to you to contrast or balance the masculine.
DOUBLE
-
- Seeing double: pick a subject that comes in twos or double up the subject, create an image of reflection, use repetition, tape two paintbrushes / pens / pencils together for your tool, explore the idea of double lines when it comes to fonts and lettering
FABRIC
- Create a collage using fabric swatches. Glue them down (I've used glue stick or mod podge) or sew fabric onto your paper/canvas or try mixing pieces of fabric with paper or other mediums to create a mixed media piece.
TEXTURE
- Re-create different textures around you. From the wood grain on your table to the bark on the tree outside to the surface of a sponge we are surrounded by so many different textures and surfaces! Take some time to study them and recreate them by sketching, creating collages, mimicking the shapes and lines using different tools. I imagine this to be a page of swatches that you can refer to in the future. However feel free to make a more finished pieces with inspiration you find from texture as well!
GRAFFITI ART
- Learn more about this art movement .
- Take your paper outside, grab some spray paint, and go for it!
- Here are some tutorials to try: How To Draw Graffiti Letters, Graffiti Letter Playlist- Tutorial For Each Letter of the Alphabet, and a Graffiti Mural Time Lapse

Click on each for some visual inspiration
PATTERN ON THE PROMPT CARD:
-
- Use the pattern as a starting point and make it your own by adding more elements, using different colors, adjusting the thickness of the lines and widths of the shapes, etc.
- Use the pattern as is. Incorporate this pattern into your piece. Use it to fill in a section or to create some texture.
And don't forget to consider the opposites of all the prompts above as well as synonyms and see where that takes you!
VIRTUAL WORKSHOP: LAYERING
Thank you for your feedback last month on which workshop you'd be interested in! I will be hosting a workshop based on "layers" (a prompt for last month) and I find it very fitting for "texture" from this month's prompt card!
This will be a 30 minute workshop guiding you through 4 layers. It will take place on Sunday, July 27th from 11:30AM - Noon. Please RSVP for free via Eventbrite--you will find any additional details and the supply list here. I'm really looking forward to this one! Below are some examples of sketchbook pages where I utilized layering.
THIS MONTH'S EXTRA:
